Programme note
Ixilongo, isiXhosa for trumpet or horn, is a duet for one player – in call and response style - for unstopped and stopped horn. The call (unstopped) consists of four phrases using the isiXhosa hexatonic bow scale (Bb, C, D, E, F, G); the responses are fragments of a song which are eventually reassembled. At three points in the work the solo horn is accompanied by an offstage ensemble of twelve horns playing hexatonic clusters, which accompany the reassembled song or provide the repeat of the opening material with its inherent harmony. It is dedicated to the memory of June Schneider, friend and teacher.
